Doraemon's Favorite Snack

With some leftover anko, I made something Doraemon will love me for.

Dorayaki - a very simple recipe from
here

When I was a kid, I'd
read the comic with envy and hate towards Nobita for having Doraemon as his best buddy. I mean WHY Nobita? Nobita is a born loser; he is helpless, uncreative, unpopular, unattractive. All he does is cry and complain to Doraemon. K even said Nobita is the most useless character in the whole history of comic, except maybe he has a kind heart. But then without him, there'll be nobody to make fun of, Giant won't have anyone to beat up when he's in bad mood, Jaiko won't have a crush, Suneo won't be able to show off his latest toys, and Shizuka can bath in peace. :D

Maybe if I make more, Doraemon will let me borrow his magic pouch?

Ohagi Rice Balls

Ohagi - slightly pounded sticky rice covered with sweet anko (bean paste)

I’ve been wanting to make my own Ohagi for the longest time, but don’t have the two main ingredients at hand: glutinous rice and azuki beans. Last week K dropped me off at the usual vegetable and produce market in Chinatown to do some shopping while he did some errands. After buying what I needed, I had a little time before K swung by again. So I wandered to the condiments aisles and what do you know, there’s the glutinous rice on sale. Okay you will probably find everything there on sale coz things are unbelievable cheap compared to your local QFCs and Safeways ( i.e. Dole bananas for $0.39/lb, 4 bunches of green onions for a $1, Fuji apples for $0.59/lb, 5 lbs of Thai glutinous rice for $2.19) . I bought the rice, and stopped by Uwajimaya to get azuki beans.

Another variation of Ohagi, covered with kinako (soy bean flour)

This dessert brings back memories of my Japanese roommate during sophomore year. Wonder how she’s doing now in Tokyo... Anyways I'm looking forward to make more dishes with the remaining glutinous rice. Umm Lo mai kai/sticky rice anyone?
